Welcome

Dear Kindergarten Parents and Family Members,

The beginning of school is usually an exciting time in the lives of children, especially kindergartners. For them, everything about school is new - from how they find things to establishing new friendships. If your child is like most children, he or she will come to school with a natural desire to learn, plenty of energy, and a tinge of anxiety brought on by the change in routine. These qualities help children make a positive adjustment to school. You've probably been preparing your child for school by answering questions and talking about school. I'd like to share several tried-and-true tips for making this experience a successful one.

1. Talk positively about school. The way your child perceives your feelings about his or her school and teacher will have a direct effect on how he or she feels about them.

2. Encourage your child to ask questions about school. Informed children are confident children.

3. If your child expresses fears or anxieties about what school will be like, listen carefully and with patience. Often, verbalizing fears helps a child to get rid of them.

4. Familiarize your child with his or her new school and surroundings.

5. Being well rested is very important. Attending school is a physically exhausting experience for most children. The first few days of school, put your child to bed a little earlier than usual. Once a routine is established, adjust bedtime to meet your child's needs.

6. Practice the routine of getting ready, and getting to school on time. Allow enough time to prevent putting the family through a harried rush.

7. To make the beginning of school seem more special, take your child with you and involve him or her when shopping for school supplies.

8. Reserve a little time after school to talk about your child's day. Right after school, if possible, look over anything he or she brought home from school. Discuss the day's happenings and offer encouragement and praise.

9. If your child expresses concern about something, which you feel needs more explanation, send me a note, email me, or call me at school and leave a message for me. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Communication and cooperation between parents and teachers is essential to promoting a good learning environment. I am delighted to have your child in my class! I look forward to working with you to ensure a great school year for your child.
